In 1971, during an episcopal visit of the then Bishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Emeritus Peter Kwasi Sarpong, to Nkoranza, the then Omanhene of Nkoranza Traditional Area, Nana Guakro Effah V, made an appeal to him to establish a hospital in Nkoranza to cater for the health needs of the people.
On August 28, 1971, Bishop Sarpong and the Traditional Council signed an agreement in Kumasi for the establishment of the hospital in Nkoranza. Dr. Theresa Kunthurithy and a nurse were sent from India in 1971 by Bishop Sarpong to Nkoranza to commence the hospital.
The Nkoranza Traditional Council on its part organized a fund-raising campaign to enable it to fulfill its obligation. Three benevolent citizens of Nkoranza, Opanin Kofi Donyina, Mad. Afia Appiaa (Mrs. Senkyireh) and Mr. G. O. Boateng, donated the following: 3 bedrooms and a hall for doctor’s accommodation, 5 bedroom house for staff accommodation, 20 bedroom house for hospital facility. Donated items also included a Mercedes Benz saloon car, a leister electric generator plant and Loaned an amount of 10,000,000 cedis as initial capital to begin the hospital
With the infrastructure in place and the nurse and medical officer ready to work, the clinic finally commenced work on 3rd January, 1972 in the building provided by Mr. G.O. Boateng. The initial staff of the clinic were one doctor, one midwife, one pharmacy assistant, one interpreter and two office staff. When the Sunyani Diocese was carved out of the Kumasi Diocese in 1973, the administration of the hospital was handed to the Sunyani Diocese with Most Rev. James Owusu as Bishop.
Nana Guakro Effah V, wrote a letter to Bishop James Owusu on 22nd April, 1974, appealing to the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani to take complete ownership of the Nkoranzaman hospital. The appeal was accepted and the hospital was renamed St. Theresa’s Hospital in 1982. On May 17, 1975, blessing and laying of foundation stone for the first block was done by Bishop James Owusu and Nana Guakro Effah V.
On March 3, 1976, the foundation stone for the OPD block and was followed with that of the medical officer’s bungalow in May of the same year. The completed OPD was commissioned on 28th April 1979 by late Bishop James Owusu and Bishop Peter Kwasi Sarpong of Kumasi. The hospital now serves as the municipal hospital for both Nkoranza north and south districts and receives referrals from neighboring districts in Bono East and Ashanti regions. It currently has a total bed capacity of 100.
